Founded in 1966 by S. Brian Simons, OEM Controls, Inc. began as a small engineering workshop with a bold vision: to design and manufacture rugged industrial control systems for specialized machinery. Operating from Riverside Avenue in Westport, Connecticut, the company started with just four employees—including Brian’s wife, Beth—and focused on rotary power systems for machine tools and welding equipment.

From these modest beginnings, OEM Controls established a foundation rooted in innovation, personalized engineering, and an uncompromising commitment to quality.

Building a Reputation for Custom Excellence

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, OEM Controls earned a reputation as a trusted supplier of electrohydraulic controllers and joystick assemblies. In 1971, Brian brought to market very rugged electro-mechanical controllers. Rather than offering off-the-shelf products, the company embraced a tailored approach—designing solutions around the precise technical requirements of each original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customer.

This commitment to customization became a defining characteristic of the company and a key differentiator in a competitive marketplace.

 

As technology advanced, OEM Controls expanded its capabilities to include multi-axis joysticks, ergonomic multi-grip handles, electronic valve driver boards, microprocessor-based logic controllers, and fully integrated panel systems. These innovations supported a diverse range of industries, including construction, agriculture, mining, marine, utilities, and material handling. The company also responded to the growing need for machine intelligence and connectivity by developing electronic modules and data capture solutions to support analytics and system integration in heavy equipment.

Growth, Leadership, and Continuity

In 2016, OEM Controls celebrated its 50th anniversary—a milestone marking both longevity and sustained industry relevance. From early annual sales of just over $79,000, the company grew into an organization employing more than 200 people and generating annual revenues in the tens of millions.

This milestone also signaled a new chapter in leadership. Brian Simons’ sons, Sam and Keith Simons, assumed the roles of Co-Presidents, continuing the family’s stewardship into a second generation. Their leadership reflects the founder’s original vision: a family-owned company built for long-term success through innovation, integrity, and operational excellence.

Today, OEM Controls operates from its 83,000 sqft. headquarters in Shelton, Connecticut, where engineering, design, prototyping, and manufacturing are performed under one roof. This vertically integrated approach ensures precision, flexibility, and close collaboration with customers—allowing the company to deliver highly specialized solutions built to perform in challenging environments.

The company’s identity remains centered on custom engineering. By focusing on tailored solutions rather than standardized products, OEM Controls continues to meet the evolving demands of equipment manufacturers operating in complex and rugged conditions.
